Medium complexity General Surgeon 12 Specialists

Overview

Appendectomy is a common surgical procedure to remove the appendix, a small pouch attached to the large intestine. It is the standard treatment for appendicitis and is often performed as an emergency surgery to prevent the appendix from rupturing. Depending on the patient's condition, the procedure may be performed using minimally invasive (laparoscopic) or open surgery.

Purpose of the surgery

The primary goal of an appendectomy is to remove an inflamed or infected appendix before it bursts. Early treatment helps prevent serious complications such as peritonitis (infection of the abdominal lining), abscess formation, and widespread infection.

Who may need it

An appendectomy may be recommended for people diagnosed with appendicitis, particularly those experiencing: Sudden pain that starts around the belly button and moves to the lower right abdomen Severe or worsening abdominal pain Fever Nausea or vomiting Loss of appetite Abdominal tenderness or swelling Your doctor may recommend surgery based on your symptoms, physical examination, blood tests, and imaging studies such as an ultrasound or CT scan.

Patient Guidance

Before surgery

Do not eat or drink for 6–8 hours before the procedure unless instructed otherwise. Tell your doctor about all medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are taking. Inform your healthcare provider if you have any allergies, bleeding disorders, or existing medical conditions. Follow all pre-operative instructions provided by your surgical team.

After surgery (recovery)

Rest for the first few days and gradually return to normal activities as advised by your doctor. Keep the surgical wound clean and dry, and follow dressing care instructions. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and intense physical activity for 2–4 weeks or until your surgeon approves. Take prescribed medications, including pain relief and antibiotics (if needed), as directed. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop fever, increasing pain, redness, swelling, pus from the incision, or persistent vomiting. Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery.
